Inspection & Licensing of Rental Dwellings

Code Enforcement staff is responsible for inspecting and licensing rental dwelling units and maintaining related records to ensure compliance with the City's ordinances and adopted codes. Inspections are conducted to ensure the safety of the occupants is maintained. Rental properties are inspected and licensed for a period up to four years, or as required by ordinance. Rental Housing Questions

  • Is the property licensed and up to date on inspections?
  • Are smoke detectors installed and operating?
  • Is there a clear and unobstructed means of travel to the outside in case of an emergency?
  • Are windows operable and sufficient size?
  • Is sufficient on-premise parking available?
  • Do you comply with the occupancy requirements for a single-family or two-family dwelling?

Occupancy Limits

Rental properties are licensed for a specific number of people – be sure to verify maximum number of occupants allowed prior to leasing.

Parking

Parking is not allowed;

  • In a front yard.
  • Within 5’ of a driveway.
  • Within 15’ of a fire hydrant.
  • Within 20’ of a crosswalk at an intersection.
  • Within 30’ of a stop sign, signal or yield sign.
  • On any non-surfaced boulevard.
  • In the same space upon a street for more than 72 continuous hours.
  • On a sidewalk or obstructing the use of such sidewalk.
  • On-street during a snow alert.

Snow and Ice Removal

Sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 48 hours of any snowfall or ice accumulation.

Lawn Care

Determine with your landlord who is responsible for lawn care, and keep your lawn clean and presentable.

Garbage and Recycling Collection

  • Green containers are for garbage and collected on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Yellow and blue containers are for recycling and collected on Thursday and Friday.
  • Collection containers must be removed from the curb the same day as collection.
